Is the electric car the vehicle of the future?

Connie Hedegaard, Denmark’s minister for the climate and energy, has contributed to the exhibition “Smart use of energy”. Along with six other stakeholders, Connie Hedegaard was involved in pinpointing the key challenges that must be met to make the electric car the car of choice for the Danes – and for the rest of the world. Next, four Danish design firms were given 24 hours to present their answers to the identified challenges. The outcome of this process is presented in the exhibition “Smart use of energy”, which opens at the Danish Design Centre on 25 September with an opening event at 16:00-18:00.

Like the rest of the world, Denmark has to address the climate challenge. We must act now to prevent massive climate changes that may lead to more droughts, more flooding and more widespread famines. “Smart use of energy” highlights the concrete measures needed to make Denmark a leader in the field of green transport in an effort to meet tomorrow’s climate challenges. The exhibition demonstrates how negative perceptions of electric cars can be transformed into goodwill to make the Danes want to use energy in a smart way and replace petrol with electric power.

“Denmark should be the country that all the nations of the world turn to for climate-friendly design solutions, and Denmark should measure up to the leading nations in the world when it comes to green transport. Global developments in climate-friendly solutions such as green transport are constantly leading to new marketing and business opportunities. The commercial potential is vast. This is a huge opportunity and a potential export bonanza for Danish businesses,” says Merete Brunander, Director of Design and Innovation at the Danish Design Centre.

Electric power and design are the way to a CO2-neutral Denmark
“Electric power is top-quality energy, and we should strive to use it more intelligently, more efficiently and with maximum synergy,” says Lars Aagaard, managing director of the Danish Energy Association. “Electric power based on renewable energy from the sun, the waves, the rivers, the wind and nature’s crops, combined with the use of electric power in our cars and homes – that is the way forward. With the electric car, we are making it easier to achieve the goal of more renewable energy, and the car is a key element in a green and CO2-neutral future.”
According to the Danish Energy Association, Denmark can be CO2-neutral by 2050 by using electric power for many more purposes than we are today. And here, design plays a key role.

“Green transport is an incredibly exciting challenge for design firms, and strategic design in particular is the essential tool for securing the electric car a more central position in the consumers’ mindset as a necessary and desirable alternative to the CO2-heavy and polluting petrol cars,” says David Fellah, CEO and partner in Designit.
