CHALLENGE
The idea behind Muuto was to aim for a unique market position as the only design-based company exclusively dedicated to new Nordic design. Muuto’s mission is, together with the leading Scandinavian designers, is add new chapters to Scandinavian design history. Muuto’s first collection was launched in 2006 and included products from designers such as Ole Jensen, Louise Campbell, Harri Koskinen, Matti Klenell, and Norway Says.
PROCESS
Muuto’s focus on innovative products begins already during the design process, as the company gives the designers almost unlimited freedom to create a new Muuto product. The process differs from designer to designer, but the point of departure – the brief – remains the same: “Create a product that has muutos (a new perspective).” Muuto’s designers range from traditionally trained designers to ceramicists, architects and artists. Some develop products by hand, while others use computer software for drawing and development work. That makes a big difference for Muuto and requires the company to be able to handle a wide range of processes, materials and approaches. Thus, Muuto’s most important task is to manage the process to maximise the creativity of the many designers.
RESULT
Since its foundation in 2006, Muuto has developed and produced more than 30 products within the fields of furniture, lighting and accessories for modern homes. The product range includes everything from vases, glass and lamps to stools, chairs and shelves, and the company currently has exports to the leading design stores in more than 40 countries, including North America, Australia, Japan and countries in Europe. Export makes up approx. 75% of turnover.
Every six months, 3-5 new products are launched, and some of the best selling products are the iconic E27 lamp, the coat hooks The Dots, and the shelf system Stacked. Muuto has accomplished the objective of becoming one of the leading Scandinavian design brands.
