CHALLENGE
We want to be the library of the future. That was the clear statement from Hjørring Bibliotek to the design firm Bosch & Fjord. The challenge was to use interior design to create a library where visitors feel welcome. Where the design channels information, education and cultural activity rather than acting as a setting for the conservation of the collection.
PROCESS
The process unfolded in a close collaboration between the library staff and Bosch & Fjord. The focus throughout has been on developing a completely new communicative framework and experience platform to make the library a multi-functional centre for experiences and knowledge. Another key focus area was tying the library’s children’s and general sections together. This emphasis led to a deliberate rejuvenation of the entire library.
RESULT
The heart of the new library and the key source of its new identity is a physical presentation structure that twists and winds its way through the library like a red thread, breaking through walls, floors and book shelves.
In addition, several ‘stages’ have been established, including the green children’s section and a Chesterfield corner for quiet reflection and reading. The result is a library where visitors enter the various stages, and where the stages are dynamic, reflecting ongoing changes in cultural trends and policies in Hjørring.
