CHALLENGE
Danes share a great sense of national pride in their deposit system and want to shop responsibly.

Still more beverage containers come with deposit but without the deposit following the general rise in prices. How does the Danish deposit and return system operator, Dansk Retursystem, ensure a high degree of recycling of packaging carrying a deposit?

FINDINGS
There are a number of other reasons for returning packaging apart from just getting back the deposit.

The system must be more transparent as consumers want to know what happens to the packaging.

SOLUTION
Three new interactive interfaces between the system and the public, visualisation of the milestones from the present-day situation to possible future scenarios and four requirements for a future consumer-oriented return system; these solutions were based on expert interviews and research into international cases. VIA Design carried out a process that focused on the design of services that are ready functionable. A service for immediate use and a service concept that can be implemented at a later date were developed in close co-operation with selected employees.
