Study environments of the future

SIGNAL arkitekter have prepared a report on future study spaces with specific examples and proposals for the design of competitive study environments in universities.

CHALLENGE
Previously, study environments comprised a table and chair at a university library. Now, something entirely different is required.

Educational establishments need to meet demands for offering attractive, competitive study environments. How do you create a study environment at an educational establishment so it supports modern learning methods, creates social and professional networks and reduces the dropout rate?

FINDINGS
There is potential in using previously overlooked areas and oases.

Universities want to use their facilities in the best way possible while offering new study environments that support modern forms of study and work.

Students want improved and larger study environments.

Increasingly, more people realise that improved class rooms and physical surroundings could be the decisive factor for students not to give up during difficult phases of their studies.

SOLUTION
On the basis of student involvement and analyses at seven universities, a report was prepared that describes the challenges of establishing, optimising and operating new and already existing study environments. The challenges include economics, lack of space, opening hours, security, maintenance,
future-proofing and consideration towards the structure of formal and informal learning methods.
In addition to providing actual examples of how the challenges can be overcome, the report presents good ideas and experiences from setting up study environments. At the same time, it indicates tendencies for designing future study environments.
