CHALLENGE
If the healthcare sector is to deal with an increasing pressure, it is necessary to break up existing rigid systems and create new structures that can organise, innovate and share knowledge across departments and professions.
Organisational innovation must be lifted to a level that creates the best possible surroundings for high-quality, efficient delivery of coherent clinical services. As a result, a project was started for the development of a cross-organisational, staff-centred innovation platform at Aarhus University Hospital, Aarhus Hospital.
FINDINGS
The implementation depended on the creation of new models for collaboration, in which staff teams from across professions and organisations work together on solving complex cross-disciplinary challenges.
Staff-driven organisational innovation must involve and have the backing of all management levels.
Ongoing dialogue concerning different expectations can help avoid barriers where management-related factors prevent the implementation of concepts for change originating from the staff.
SOLUTION
Development of new innovation initiatives for the hospital, where actual cases are basis for the training of the organisation’s process workers in applying new concept-development methods and tools in real-life clinical problems.
The case “Images” resulted in 14 prioritised solutions that could be implemented directly for better flow and collaboration between departments, resulting in improved quality and – just as important – timely information and treatment.
In cooperation with Conceptmaking, the two internal process managers in charge of the project developed a detailed implementation plan and currently help departments execute their solutions.
