CHALLENGE
In the future, the hospitals’ emergency units will develop into one unit whereas today, the functions and wards are separated physically and in different sectors.
How do you ensure the necessary quality in treating and assessing patients, a suitable logistical flow, good service and a good working environment in the emergency unit of the future hospitals?
FINDINGS
By offering the patients a different service business where functions are comparable to the procedures in the health care sector, creative ideas and new opportunities evolved.
The project’s involvement of many different professional groups and many different wards had the great added benefit of building cooperation.
SOLUTION
The emergency unit staff created three prototypes for the development of future emergency units, and three prototypes for “the beating heart”, which is the reception area of the emergency unit. The healthcare-related discussions and arguments during the prototype development process were documen-ted and used by different clients, including the architect from the consultancy working on the new Aarhus University Hospital and the management of the emergency unit at Aarhus Hospital. The project also resulted in staff quickly assuming ownership of the upcoming emergency unit and its functions.
