Eat and learn

The design agency e-Types was asked to develop a concept to improve culinary culture and thus the learning environment in municipal primary and lower-secondary schools in Copenhagen.

CHALLENGE
Many school pupils have no or just a poor lunch, resulting in disturbances and poor learning environment during classes as well as poor food culture in the longer term.

How do you offer pupils the chance of getting a decent meal with the benefit of improved learning atmosphere for everyone?

FINDINGS
Attractive settings are necessary if children and young people are to become interested in healthy, stimulating food.

Teachers must be able to see educational opportunities and the pupils must have the chance to bring their own world to the concept.

It is important to be able to eat together. Style, atmosphere and a feeling of ownership in the eating area are decisive elements.

SOLUTION
With the purpose of enhancing a healthy food culture, EAT is staged with its own brand and design, developed by Københavns Madhus and the design agency e-Types. Campaigns, school stalls, lounges, packaging, clothing and merchandise bring people together around EAT and invite the pupils to
contribute in their own way.

The campaign has reduced the number of conflicts and created a greater readiness for learning. In addition, the kitchen has become a new classroom and EAT has put food and meal-time culture on the agenda at individual schools. EAT has prepared the way for a subsidy project that gives the poorest families the option of receiving subsidised school meals. About 6% of pupils used the previous school meal programme. A year and a half after its premiere, 20% of the pupils at 13 campaign schools participate in the EAT programme.
