Blood, sweat and tears

3PART and Vejle Sygehus have improved the working environment and the tools for bio-analysts who work with blood samples in the Clinical Chemical Laboratory at Vejle Hospital. This has also led to improved user experiences for patients.

CHALLENGE
Over 10 million blood samples are collected every year in Denmark at a total cost of about DKK 500 billion. The cost rises by about 7% every year.

Increases in numbers of blood samples collected result in absences due to illness and stress and a lack of expertise among bio-analysts. Patients are frustrated by poorer service. Vejle Hospital and 3PART want to improve the blood-sampling process.

FINDINGS
The surroundings and tools of bio-analysts can be improved.

The work of bio-analysts is not only about the technical challenges involved in collecting blood samples, but equally about creating a good, safe experience for the patient.

For patients, giving a blood sample is often a difficult break in their everyday routines.

SOLUTION
Together with the Bio-chemical Laboratory at Vejle Hospital, 3PART identified the possibilities for improving the blood-sampling work process. The result was a total of 99 recommendations involving improvements to the work place, design of the work place and the products used. The result was 99 proposals that focused partly on improving bio-analysts’ tools and working environment and partly on transforming the collecting of blood samples into a better, less stressful event for both patients and bio-analysts. Some of the results have been implemented in the daily routines of the newly built Bio-chemical
Laboratory.
