It is hard to predict the future, but it is possible to point to some of the products and services that will be important in the future. See ten design solutions that, each in their way, have the potential to become future design icons.

The design company, Design by Us, developed the Shades by Us concept. Users design their own lampshade from more than 20,000 possible combinations of form and colour. While designing a lampshade, the users can see a preview of the final result, enabling them to make a design that perfectly matches their wishes.

The Prince Chair, 2002

The Prince Chair, designed by Louise Campbell, is inspired by old bobbin lace tablecloths and has a solid metal base. Rapid prototyping was used in the design process. The chair, which was originally designed for a competition for Crown Prince Frederik, features a beautiful blend of classic and modern design.

The French designer Patrick Jounis created Solid Chair. The advanced construction was not possible until rapid prototyping technology was incorporated into the design process. With Solid Chair, Patrick Jounis strives to show how new technologies can contribute to and influence a design process aimed at breaking away from and streamlining traditional design methods.

This swimsuit from Speedo is designed to establish the ideal conditions for swimming as fast as possible. However, after it was launched on the market it was prohibited from use in competition based on the argument that the water-repellent characteristics added too much technology to the sport.

The Viking TST (Thermal Sensor Technology) fire-fighter suit is a good example of intelligent clothing. The aim was to create the optimal conditions for fire-fighters in action. Using sensors, the suit measures the heat the fire-fighter is exposed to and monitors his/her vital functions to avoid overheating.
The suit won the 2007 Danish Product Award in the category electronics.
 

Nature

Mushroom and WaterLily are both LED lamps featuring design based on nature. By combining two forms of LED technology, it is possible to adjust the light intensity and colour, both fundamental elements of the lamps’ utility value. WaterLily was developed in collaboration with DTU Fotonik and the company I-NO. Mushroom was developed in cooperation with Risø – the National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy.
 

Clouds, 2008

Clouds consists of small elements that can be connected with special rubber bands. The concept allows people to create their own individual look and design a decoration that can hang from a wall or ceiling. Clouds develops and changes when you add additional elements, enabling a state of constant change.

The OX laptop is a user-friendly, hand-rechargable and cheap computer of high quality for children. The concept of ‘One laptop per child’ is meant as a technological helping hand for children in developing countries in particular, who would not otherwise have the opportunity to own a computer. The OX laptop won the 2007 INDEX:AWARD.

Vestergaard-Frandsen designed Lifestraw. Its built-in filter cleans water as it travels through the straw, making it possible to drink non-potable water without getting sick.

Ordrupgaardbænken (the Ordrupgaard bench), made of solid ash, was designed by the Iraqi-born architect, Zaha Hadid. It was specially designed for the building extension she created for the Ordrupgaard in Charlottenlund. During COP15 in 2009, delegates were encouraged to sign a copy of the bench, which was then auctioned off, with the proceeds going to WWF.

This Vipp bin was decorated by the Chilean designer Maurice Clavero and is adorned with more than 72,000 Swarowski crystals.

The NAP (Natural Active Passive) chair is based on an analytical approach to ensuring that one can sit on the chair without sliding around. NAP supports any sitting position. This stackable chair is made of nylon and is available with and without armrests.

MAXJENNY is a Scandinavian brand that produces innovative, high quality fashion made of sustainable materials. The designer uses innovative cuts with few seams and attempts to eliminate the boundaries between seasonal trends based on the approach: wear it, live it and use it.

The rapid development of technology has led to an implicit outdating of some products, which need replacing regularly, as opposed to other products. In addition, certain products are designed to signal a specific identity which is then emphasized to the surrounding world about the individual user. This trend is characteristic of the mobile telephone industry, where new functions are designed to shorten the lifetime of mobile telephones.
